COMPLEXD WOMAN: NEFERTITI YATES

Name: Nefertiti Yates, Age: 20, Place of Birth: Los Angeles, CA, Current Residence: Atlanta, GA

My mother is Mexican and my father is Irish. I grew up in a trilingual household, where we spoke English, Spanish and used sign language.

I’m a model/writer, my family is very artistic so creative writing came naturally. I enjoy writing screenplays and I am currently working on a book. Modelling also allows me to express my creativity. I recently did a photo-shoot with VIBE magazine that incorporated words and imagery.

I define my style as ‘Psychadelic Exotica’. I love to mix exotic prints with vibrant colours. Think leopard print leggings teamed with brightly coloured halter tops.

I love being a woman because we are brave and sexy. Whether we are walking in 6-inch stilettos on an uneven pavement or giving a speech at the senate…we can still be confident and charming.

I am Complexd because my big curls suit my ‘off the richter scale’ personality and flamboyant sense of style.

COMPLEXD WOMAN: KRISTEN M STUART

Name:  Kristen M Stuart
Age: 23
Place of birth: Long Beach, Ca
Current residence:  Long Beach, Ca

I’m German, Scottish, and Polish. My mother is a Housewife and my father is a Inspector.

I was a photographer before I started styling. My love for photography started at a young age when I used to go to my oldest brother’s house and stare at his photography books for the whole day.

Since the day my fiancé, photographer Mike Nguyen asked me to style a photo-shoot for him  I have loved every moment of it.

My personal style varies between feminine and edgy. Sometimes I love to play dress up and look like a lady and sometimes I like that rocker chick edge.

I love how diverse we are as woman. We come in various  shapes and can experiment with many different styles. Women are beautiful creatures, and I’m honoured God made me a woman.

I am Complexd because I have a twin brother who is my complete opposite. He is always proud of me for all the blood, sweat and tears I put into my work.

COMPLEXD WOMAN: RATULA BANERJEE

Name: Ratula Banerjee
Age: 30
Place of birth: Kolkata, West Bengal, India
Current residence: Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

I was born in a small town and grew up in an Indian Bengali family. My father worked for the Indian Air Force so I lived with my extended family whose culture and religions were diverse and varied. As a young girl I enjoyed classical singing and attended convent school in my teens.

I’m a theatre and television actress and I also dabble in fashion styling. All it takes is hard work, dedication and passion to make  a career out of the things you love to do.

My style is unconventional; I’m a free-spirited person who lives, loves and laughs a lot so I like to wear bright colours. Right now I call my style retro hippie reincarnation.

A woman’s greatest skills are  patience and understanding. We make good listeners who have the strength to support and the heart to care. We have the ability to create, nurture and transform.

I am Complexd because I am many forms of me. I am a woman, a friend, a lover, a mother and sometimes I am crazy and random.

EDITOR’S DIARY: ELITE MODEL LOOKS WORLDWIDE

Elite Model Look has been casting for new faces worldwide since 1983. The contest has launched the careers of supermodels like Cindy Crawford and Gisele Bundchen so I was happy to hear that for the first time the Elite team took their search to Grenada.  Vice President Jean Pierre Begon of Elite International and John Bilboa Director of Elite Latin, South America and Caribbean teamed up with Grenada’s popular television show host Lexan Medford to coordinate the casting on Saturday 17th September.  Out of 38 hopefuls the slender figure of Aria Francis and the commercial features of Joelle Frederick will represent Grenada at the Caribbean semi-finals which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago.  The winner will then participate in the world finals in Shanghai in November 2011.

Across the region Jamaica has had highest number of high fashion models walking for international fashion powerhouses and gracing the covers of established publications. So it’s a big opportunity for smaller islands to propel their model potential to greater heights through the platform that Elite provides.

At Complexd we promote the talents and achievements of women worldwide. I commend this international modelling contest for giving opportunities to young girls of all nationalities in over 70 countries.  Good luck to the girls in Grenada and 2011 candidates in all competing countries.

EDITOR’S DIARY: I WANT THAT SKIRT!

Trinidadian designer Anya Ayoung Chee, featured in our LOVE THY WOMAN issue has progressed tremendously since she became a contestant on Project Runway’s 9th season.

The first time I met Anya she was wearing a skirt (pictured below) from the debut collection of her label PILAR.  Her debut collection was inspired by elements of Trinidadian and Rastafarian culture and I remember gasping, ‘I want a skirt like that’!

She has stood out amongst her fellow contestants because she uses her experiences and diverse cultural heritage to inspire her unique designs. Week after week she has created covetable pieces that have  made her a favourite to win.

Below are a few of Anya’s designs from her final collection shown at the Lincoln Center during Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week in NY.
